Bronx man arrested on heroin trafficking charges in Portland

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — An investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency into the distribution of heroin in the Portland area led to the arrest of a Bronx, N.Y., man.

Wayman Sparrow, 22, was arrested on Saturday evening and charged with aggravated trafficking in Schedule W drugs, unlawful possession of Schedule W drugs and carrying a concealed weapon.

“On June 1, MDEA agents arrested Sparrow in South Portland as a result of an investigation into the unlawful distribution of heroin in the greater Portland area,” read a joint release from the Maine Department of Public Safety and the MDEA. “At the time of his arrest, Sparrow was in possession of a loaded .40-caliber handgun, a small amount of cocaine, scales and assorted items used for packaging and distributing drugs.”

After his arrest, two hotel rooms rented by Sparrow in Portland and South Portland were searched, revealing 2.5 ounces of heroin with a street value of $10,000 and $4,600 in cash.

Sparrow was transferred to Cumberland County Jail in Portland with bail set at $100,000.

MDEA agents were assisted by police from Portland and South Portland.

Additional arrests are expected in the ongoing investigation.
