Parkview hospital in Brunswick cuts 5.4 percent of its workforce

BRUNSWICK, Maine — A loss in revenue, coupled with unpaid MaineCare debt, has prompted Parkview Adventist Medical Center to cut 16 hospital staff positions — a 5.4 percent cut in the workforce, the hospital said in a news release today.

“This is being achieved by reducing management costs and realigning hospital staffing to match current volumes,” Parkview President and CEO Randee Reynolds said in the release.

Reynolds made the announcement today and said the move was prompted by a decline in revenue, driven by several factors such as fewer patients, more spending on charitable care and reduced government funding. In April, Parkview received a 2% cut in Medicare payments as a result of the federal budget sequester.

Hospitals across Maine are facing a decreased demand for inpatient and outpatient services, increasing bad debts and reimbursement cuts.

“For years, Parkview has been working diligently on lowering costs for care to our patients, while increasing the quality of the care they receive,” Reynolds said.

Recently Parkview received an “A” grade by the Leapfrog Group, which measures hospital safety. “We are proud of the role Parkview has played in the Greater Brunswick community since 1959. Unfortunately, the government’s unpaid bills combined with fewer patients means we have had no other choice but to make changes,” Reynolds added.

All services will continue to be available to the community. No services at Parkview will be eliminated.

“While many hospitals across the country, including many here in Maine, have many of the same pressures on their performance, we believe Parkview Adventist Medical Center will adapt appropriately,” Reynolds said. “The hospital will continue to meet the needs of the greater Brunswick community. Parkview truly belongs to this community.”

Parkview Adventist Medical Center, which opened in 1959, is an acute care hospital located at 329 Maine Street in Brunswick.
