CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Track and field and cross country standout Corey Conner of the University of Maine is among three finalists for the 2013 America East Woman of the Year award.
Boston University’s Katie Matthews (cross country/track & field) and the University of Hartford’s Caitlin Alves (women’s soccer) are her competitors for the distinction.
The honor recognizes the conference’s senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her career in terms of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.
The 2013 America East Woman of the Year will be announced Tuesday at the conference’s annual awards dinner in Portland, the site of the conference’s annual meeting.
Conner has won seven conference titles in cross country and track. The native of West Townsend, Mass., won the outdoor 5,000-meter title in 2012, the cross country title in 2009, the indoor mile in 2010, the indoor 4×800 in 2009, the indoor 3K in 2013, the outdoor 4×800 in 2010 and the outdoor 1,500 in 2009.
She has made Dean’s List in every semester at Maine and carries a 3.73 GPA as a Nursing major. Conner earned All-America second-team honors in the 5,000 in 2013, while being named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team twice in 2011 and 2013.
Conner also was named Friday to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2012-2013 Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country First Team.
She also been named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and named to the America East Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Conner previously won the M Club Dean Smith Award, given to UMaine’s top male and female student-athletes.
Conner is a two-time USTFCCCA All-American and will conclude her collegiate career next week when she runs in the 10,000 at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The America East Woman of the Year award was established for the 2005-06 athletic season. The winner’s name will be forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee, which will pick the top 10 winners in each NCAA division (I, II and III).
UMaine baseball players Mike Fransoso, Eric White of Brewer and Mike Connolly have been selected for the 2013 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game.
The trio of Black Bears earned spots on the University Division squad consisting of Division I stars, which will take on the College Division team made up of Division II and III standouts on Monday at 7 p.m. at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
Fransoso, a senior shortstop, was named the America East Player of the Year and a Louisville Slugger All-America third-team pick. He batted .352 with four home runs, 49 runs batted in and 20 stolen bases.
White, a junior third baseman, was an All-America East first-team choice. He hit .347 with a team-leading six homers and 37 RBIs. Connolly was a two-position standout for UMaine.
The junior was an all-league first-team catcher, batting .310 with a homer and 14 RBIs. He threw out 27 of 52 would-be base steals. On the mound, he gained second-team honors with a 6-4 record, a 2.11 earned run average and a .221 opponents batting average.
