Police urge public be wary of ‘younger relative’ scam

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police are urging the public to be aware of a scam targeting the elderly.

Only one report has been made recently to Portland police, but the scam has been happening throughout the country. The scam involves an elderly person receiving a phone call from someone masquerading as a younger family member or friend. The caller claims that they have been arrested and need bail money.

The caller then persuades the victim to transfer money to the caller so that they can be released from jail, and a follow-up call will be made from someone claiming to be the arrested person’s attorney.

Anyone who believes they are being scammed is urged to call Portland police at 874-8479.
