DEXTER, Maine — A local man is in jail and facing two felony charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and a child, according to police.
Brian Collins, 28, was arrested on Saturday and charged with two counts of Class C domestic assault.
Dexter officers responded to a Maple Street residence at 10 a.m. Saturday, according to Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle, who added that Collins called police himself.
“It’s alleged that he assaulted his live-in girlfriend and a 4-year-old child,” Wintle said on Thursday, adding that Collins allegedly picked the child off the ground by the youngster’s hair. The child was not his.
Collins was arrested and transported to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he remained on Thursday.
“It started as verbal and things escalated,” said Wintle, adding there were visible marks on the female.
Collins is due to appear on July 11 in Penobscot County Superior Court in Bangor.
A Class C felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.
