Medway man charged in copper thefts

BANGOR, Maine — A Medway man has been charged in connection with copper thefts from Bangor Hydro Electric Company’s power substations throughout Penobscot County.

Anthony Brasslett, 26, is charged with theft by unauthorized taking, a Class C felony, according to Bangor Hydro spokeswoman Susan Faloon.

The suspect was arrested Wednesday by Penobscot County Sheriff’s deputies, Faloon said. Federal charges are pending depending on damages to the electrical system. Bangor Hydro plans to seek restitution.

The total cost of the theft has not been determined and there may be additional arrests in the case, Faloon said.

“Copper theft is costly and tampering with electrical equipment can be extremely dangerous,” Faloon said. “There is no way to tell if a line is energized.”

The suspect is being held at Penobscot County Jail on $2,000 bail.
