CORNISH, Maine — A local man was arrested Friday morning after citizens attempted to prevent him from driving drunk near his residence, police said.

Joseph Papi, 59, of Cornish, was charged with operating under the influence, violating a protection order and violating conditions of release, according to Chief Deputy William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office. King noted that this was Papi’s fourth offense for violating conditions of release.

A witness told deputies that he saw Papi, who was visibly intoxicated, enter his vehicle and prevented him from driving by blocking his way and taking his keys, King said. Papi was outside near his residence when the trouble started.

Papi wasn’t pleased and had to be physically restrained until deputies arrived at the scene.

Papi was arrested and is being held without bail at York County Jail.
