DEER ISLE, Maine — A 24-year-old was pulled over and arrested Monday evening after allegedly threatening a woman and her family from behind the wheel of his car.

Peter W. Chiumiento Jr. of Brooksville was charged with terrorizing and driving to endanger around 5:45 p.m. Monday in Deer Isle.

Police were called on a report that Chiumiento was driving “in an erratic manner” and making threats with a weapon. He was stopped by Deputy Luke Gross moments later, according to an incident report.

According to Lt. Pat Kane of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Chiumiento had pulled up behind the victim, who was in another vehicle, and threatened to hurt her and her family.

“Then he pulled up beside her and made even more threats,” Kane said.

The lieutenant said that Chiumiento knows the victim but that the two are not related. The incident wasn’t considered a domestic situation, he said.

Kane said Gross was still investigating the nature of the threats and he could not give any details about the nature of or motive for the alleged confrontation.

Although the suspect was reported to have made threats with a weapon, Kane said no weapons were found in the vehicle. Chiumiento was brought to Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where he remained on Tuesday morning pending a bail hearing.

Chiumiento has a minor criminal history, including charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia, dating to 2008. Driving to endanger and terrorizing are both Class D crimes, each punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
