KENNEBUNK, Maine — For years, restaurants throughout the Kennebunks have attracted national attention for their fine cuisine, and now clothing catalogs are taking notice of the seaside towns.
L.L. Bean has highlighted Kennebunk with its wrinkle-resistant Kennebunk shirt, a button-down shirt for men, and the Kennebunk collection of tote bags for women.
“I’ve always thought that Kennebunk’s name alone is a brand, just like Kennebunkport’s name is a brand,” said Kennebunk Town Manager Barry Tibbetts. “They both have phenomenally good reputations and in large part because of their retail and tourist side which has been established for so many years, but also because of the Bush family, who brought a positive vibe.”
While last fall Appleseeds held a photo shoot for its spring 2012 catalog on Kennebunk’s Main Street, Kennebunkport was recently chosen by Lands’ End, which conducted a shoot for its catalog on the Cape Porpoise Pier.
Town Manager Larry Mead said the shoot took place in early May, with the Goat Island Lighthouse and the working pier serving as a backdrop.
The town has also lent its name to OPI’s Kennebunkport red nail polish and Benjamin Moore’s Kennebunkport green paint color.
“I think what it says is that it is good business for companies to utilize the image that this area conjures up for people. When people see the visuals of this area, it’s a positive reaction that folks have,” Mead said. “They associate it with good memories or wonderful things to do.”
