CHARLOTTE, Maine — Five-year-old Trent James was killed Sunday when he was struck at his Ayers Junction Road home by a vehicle being backed up by his father, Calvin James.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Ryan Allen responded to a call from the Calais Regional Hospital, where James, 35, drove his son for treatment. The boy was unresponsive upon arrival and could not be revived.

“Although every indication of the initial investigation [shows that this] appears to be an accident, this investigation is continuing and is expected to take some time,” said Chief Deputy Shawn Donahue is a statement released Sunday morning. “Our hearts go out to the James family.”
