Hip Hop Summit to bring art, dance, music and role models to Portland’s East Bayside

By Troy R. Bennett, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — Painter and sculptor Andrew Coffin’s ONEworks company is unleashing the first Maine Hip Hop Summit in the city’s East Bayside neighborhood Saturday, June 8. The daylong celebration of hip-hop art, dancing and music is aimed squarely at the kids who call the neighborhood home, including the nearby Kennedy Park public housing project.

“We want an event to draw youth from the neighborhood,” Coffin said Thursday of the event that he hopes will become a yearly celebration. “We want to give them a voice and role models. This event is for them. A lot of these kids are underserved.”

The summit, which takes place rain or shine at 200 Anderson St., will feature positive-message DJs and rappers, and a b-boy dance contest. Free organic food will be served. Coffin and ONEworks partner Zach Broda are providing sanctioned surfaces for kids to try their hand at graffiti-style painting. Established painters will be filling up 10 panels to be sold at a later date to fund next year’s summit.

Coffin has convinced East Bayside businesses such as Indoor Plant Kingdom, Urban Farm Fermentory and Arm Factory to sponsor the event.

“It’s for the people,” said Christopher Gillard of Indoor Plant Kingdom. “We’re just putting this on to connect with the community and give back a little bit and present something that’s going to be free of charge.”

The free daytime event will be followed up by evening performances downtown at Binga’s Stadium for adults 18 and over.
