PUEBLO, Colo. — Gabe Proctor of Corinth won his second title at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on Saturday with a first-place finish for Western State Colorado University in the men’s 5,000-meter run.

Proctor, a senior who graduated on May 11, fended off challenges by American International’s Glarius Rop down the stretch to win with a time of 14 minutes, 27.77 seconds, just short of breaking the facility record by 0.14 seconds.

Proctor, who also won the men’s 10,000-meter run on Thursday, is only the second Mountaineer male in school history to win two outdoor track and field national titles in one year. Michael Aish also accomplished this feat by winning the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters in 2002.

Colby relay team second

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Only the home school could stop the Colby College women’s 1,600-meter relay team from a national championship on Saturday night at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse.

The 1,600 relay team of Emily Doyle, Frances Onyilagha, Emily Tolman, and Brittney Bell finished second in the country to Wisconsin-La Crosse in a riveting final at the NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Mules broke the Colby record for the fifth time since May 1 with a clocking of 3 minutes, 44.74 seconds. Colby came into the NCAA meet with a top time of 3:49.98, set at the Open New England Championships. In a meet against the best relay teams in the country, the Mules took more than five seconds off that clocking. Colby had a 3:46.13 in Thursday’s preliminary race and knew they needed to get below 3:45.0 for any chance at a national title.

Wisconsin-La Crosse, running on the same track they practice on daily, won the title with a time of 3:43.52. They also had the fastest time in the preliminary heats with a 3:44.34.
