APPLETON, Wisconsin — Junior Forrest Chadwick grounded a single through the right side of a drawn-in infield to score sophomore Jake Glauser from third base in the top of the 10th inning as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Millsaps College Majors 2-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Division III College World Series Friday at Fox Cities Stadium.
The victory moves the Huskies (43-8) into a winners’ bracket game at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon against the winner of the game between Ithaca College and Linfield College. The Majors (38-13) will face an elimination game Saturday morning against the loser of the Ithaca-Linfield game.
Glauser, pinch-hitting for junior Troy Thibodeau to lead off the 10th inning, worked a walk from Millsaps senior right-handed starter Will Edwards. Glauser moved to second when senior Stephen Gates’ throw to second base on an attempted sacrifice by USM freshman Sam Dexter struck Edwards in the head and bounced over to third base. Edwards would leave the game after being evaluated by the Millsaps athletic trainer and coaches.
Millsaps called on freshman Harper Grier to face junior John Carey, who successfully sacrificed Glauser and Dexter along. Senior Tucker was intentionally walked to load the bases, bringing Chadwick to the plate. Chadwick grounded his single between the first and second basemen to bring home Glauser.
Sophomore Andrew Richards, who came on in relief of USM rookie starter Shyler Scates in the sixth inning, surrendered a one-out single to Gates in the home half of the 10th, but stranded him at first on two fly ball outs. Richards, who improved to 10-2, allowed no runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three.
Scates, making the start in place of junior ace Logan Carman, who is still feeling the effects of a line drive he took off his pitching arm last weekend at the NCAA Regional, went the first five innings, giving up one run on five hits. Scates did not walk anyone while fanning four.
USM reached Edwards for the tying run in the sixth as Carey led off with a single, advanced to second on a one-out wild pitch and scored on senior Nick Grady’s two-out single down the right-field line.
Chadwick was the lone USM hitter with two base hits. Junior Kevin Wall had three hits for the Majors.
