AUGUSTA, Maine — With the summer tourist season officially kicking off this weekend, state police will be beefing up patrols along the state’s highways during Memorial Day Weekend.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said troopers will have additional patrols on the roadways.

In addition to speeders, drunk drivers and aggressive drivers, police will be on the lookout for motorists violating Maine’s seat belt and texting and driving laws. A state police aircraft will also be utilized.

Two people were killed in Memorial Day weekend crashes last year, according to McCausland.

Police statewide are also in the midst of their “Buckle Up — No Excuses” campaign, which cracks down on drivers who don’t use their seat belts.
