BELFAST, Maine — Police arrested a man last week at a Belfast hotel after officers conducting a bail check found a loaded, cocked semi-automatic handgun under his pillow.

John T. Berry, 42, has been living at the Searsport Avenue hotel for “quite some time,” according to Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden. Berry must adhere to bail conditions placed on him on a previous charge of operating under the influence that prohibit him from drinking and also subject him to random searches. He also has a protection from abuse order on file against him, which prohibits him from being in possession of a weapon.

Officers who went to check on him Friday evening stationed themselves at both the front and back doors of the hotel room.

“They were anticipating he might flee,” McFadden said Wednesday.

In fact, when officers knocked on the front door, Berry did quickly leave via the back door, carrying a large bottle of alcohol in his hand. When he saw the policeman blocking his exit, Berry reportedly raised the bottle over his head in a threatening manner, the chief said.

“The officer quickly took Mr. Berry to the ground and restrained him,” McFadden said.

When police searched the hotel room, they found the 9mm handgun under his pillow.

Berry was arrested and charged with violation of conditions of release and violation of the protection from abuse order. He was taken to Waldo County Jail in Belfast to be booked.
