WATERVILLE, Maine — A local man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a high-speed pursuit on May 16, according to police.

Ernest Almeida, 31, faces up to five years behind bars on a Class C felony charge of eluding a police officer, according to Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey. Almeida is also accused of driving to endanger and being a habitual motor vehicle offender.

Almeida was taken into custody Friday in New Haven, Conn., according to Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney. An extradition hearing for Almeida has not been set, Maloney said Wednesday.

“I do feel confident that we’ll be successful in extraditing him back whether he waives or not,” said Maloney.

The incident involving Almeida started shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday, when Waterville police Officer Tim Hinton observed the suspect’s Jeep pull into the Burger King on College Avenue, Rumsey said.

The officer was familiar with Almeida, as Rumsey said Hinton knew the suspect had a suspended license. When Hinton approached the vehicle, Almeida fled the scene.

“Hinton pursued him for a short distance between College Avenue and North Street, and at that point our patrol supervisor advised him to disengage the pursuit,” Rumsey said Tuesday, noting that traffic and high speeds were major factors in Hinton backing off.

Almeida continued to elude police north into Fairfield and Skowhegan, escaping from Somerset County sheriff’s deputies and Skowhegan police.

On Friday, Almeida was taken into custody on an Amtrak train in Connecticut after an off-duty FBI agent overheard him bragging about running from police, according to Maloney.

Should Almeida waive extradition, Maloney said it’s possible a governor’s warrant will be issued to bring him back to Kennebec County to face charges.

“We’ll certainly proceed on the case right away,” said Maloney.
