JACKMAN, Maine — A 36-year-old Vienna man is facing multiple charges after stealing a car in Jackman and later totaling it in a crash on Monday night, police said.

Shane Gurney had been attending a function in town and was intoxicated, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

Gurney stole the 2000 Dodge Neon from Main Street shortly after 7:30 p.m., the chief deputy said. The owner of the vehicle, whose name was not released, is from Jackman.

Upon stealing the car, Gurney drove south on Route 201 into West Forks where he later was involved in a rollover accident, according to Lancaster. He emerged uninjured after the crash and was questioned by Cpl. Eugene Cole shortly after.

“He was walking down the road, and that’s when the deputy confronted him,” said Lancaster.

Gurney was arrested and charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, a Class C felony, along with operating under the influence and operating after suspension, Lancaster explained.

Gurney was treated for minor injuries at Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan before being transported to the Somerset County Jail, the chief deputy said. He was later released on bail.
