MACHIAS – Charles E. Berry, died May 17, 2013, in Bangor. He was born July 24, 1927, in Machias, son of Ralph A. and Verna M. (Dowling) Berry.
Charles was a 1946 graduate of Machias High School. He was a member of the Maine State Guard during World War II. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, 1950-1952. He was a life member of Machias Fire Department, Machias Valley Sportsman’s Club, Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, SAM, and was a registered Maine Guide. He was a member of Harwood Lodge No. 91, AM & FM, Machias, and Royal Arch Commandry No. 18. He received a 50 year Veteran’s medal from the Grand Lodge of Maine. He went to work for Mawhinney Motor Company in 1948 and in 1957 for Gordon Marston at the Esso station, the management of which he took over in 1960. When he decided to step down from that position in 1982 he worked for awhile at the same place for Donald Johnson and after that, for R.H. Foster.
He is survived by sisters, Faye Miller and husband, John, of Rockford, Mich., Imogene Martin of Orono and Dorothy Gardner and husband, Harlan, of Marshfield; brother, Dwight and wife, Mary, of South Portland; nieces, Cynthia Kurz, Cathy Dent and husband, David, and Janet Miller; and nephews, Gary Martin and wife, Patty, Stephen Berry, Gregory Berry and wife, Sharon, and Jeffrey Berry; and special nephew who was like a son to him, Dana Martin and wife, Marcella, of Stillwater.
