ST. GEORGE, Maine — Firefighters, ambulance personnel and members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office spent nearly an hour Sunday night searching for two people believed to have been injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash.

It turned out to be a hoax.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said an 18-year-old Rockland man contacted emergency crews when he received a text message from a female juvenile whom he knew. The girl reported that she had been in an ATV crash with a boy who was hurt.

Approximately 15 people arrived at Clark Island Road at 7:30 p.m. after a report came in that a crash had occurred in a gravel pit, Chris Leavitt of the St. George Fire Department said.

The department contacted the cell phone provider and traced the phone to the girl’s home where she had been all afternoon.

Sgt. James Moore, who investigated the case, has referred the matter to the district attorney’s office for possible criminal prosecution, Carroll said.
