Saco man found dead in burned home after six-hour standoff

BANGOR, Maine — A Saco man was found dead inside his house after a fiery standoff, according to authorities.

The body of Charles Scontras, 58, was found in the rubble after his house was engulfed in flames Saturday night, according to a news release from Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Scontras set fire to the inside of the home during a standoff with police, according to the release. The house was destroyed, McCausland said.

The Maine State Police tactical team and Saco police and fire departments spent nearly seven hours at the scene, according to WCSH TV.

Police blocked off Hillview Avenue and several nearby homes were evacuated.

Scontras’ body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy, according to the release.
