RUMFORD — A Rhode Island woman in town for a wedding this weekend was injured Friday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Route 108 at the Congress Street intersection, police said.

Cynthia Conant-Arp, 65, of Warwick, R.I., complained of a neck injury and was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital, Rumford police Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said. None of the other drivers or Conant-Arp’s passenger were injured.

Maifeld said Conant-Arp was still being examined late Friday afternoon at the hospital.

He said the accident happened at 1:56 p.m. A 2008 GMC pickup truck, owned and operated by Rumford veterinarian Frederick Kent, 65, was stopped on Route 108 in a line of traffic waiting for a vehicle ahead to turn left onto Canal Street.

Conant-Arp, who was driving a 2013 Nissan sport utility vehicle, and her passenger, Diane Gallagher, 56, of Peru, were stopped behind Kent, Maifeld said.

William Gilman, 21, of Peru, the driver of a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, told Maifeld he came through the intersection and glanced down Congress Street, then looked back and saw the line of stopped traffic ahead of him. Maifeld said Gilman slammed on the brakes and hit the rear of the Nissan, shoving it into Kent’s truck. The front end of the Blazer was crushed into the engine compartment. It was towed by Adley’s Auto of Rumford; the other two vehicles were driven from the scene.

The front and rear bumpers on the Nissan were damaged and Kent’s truck had minimal damage to its rear bumper, Maifeld said.

All four people were wearing safety belts. Rumford firefighters directed traffic around the accident and cleared debris and fluids from the road.
