RANGELEY, Maine — The bodies of two snowmobilers missing since New Year’s Eve were found in Rangeley Lake on Wednesday morning.
John Spencer, 41, of Litchfield and Kenneth Henderson, 40, of China were found in 60 feet of water, according to Doug Rafferty, spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Sonar technology was used to find the men’s bodies, according to Rafferty. Windy conditions and a large search area — approximately 2 1/2 miles were covered — made for a difficult search, the spokesman said.
Maine Warden Service divers recovered the bodies of Spencer and Kenneth Henderson at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The discovery of the bodies concludes a lengthy search effort nearly six months after the three men went missing during a New Year’s Eve snowmobile ride and their sleds were found in Rangeley Lake. Search operations had ceased in February because of ice on the lake and had resumed earlier this month.
The bodies of Kenneth Henderson and Spencer were turned over to Wiles Funeral Home in Farmington.
