ELLSWORTH, Maine — A man indicted nearly six years ago on three felony charges after allegedly forcing sexual contact on a preteen girl is finally back in Maine after he was apprehended in Colorado.

William J. Hickey, 65, who according to jail documents is currently a resident of Taft, Calif., was delivered by authorities to the Hancock County Jail on May 9, where he is being held on $10,000 cash bail. If he posts bail, he will not be allowed to contact the victim listed in his indictment or anyone under 16 years old. He also would not be allowed to leave the state.

Hickey was indicted by a grand jury in Hancock County on June 5, 2007. The jury charged Hickey — who at that time was a 59-year-old resident of Greenbush — with three counts of unlawful sexual contact, a Class B felony. An indictment is not a determination of guilt, but rather a determination by the jury that there is enough evidence to proceed with a criminal trial.

The charges stem from three separate incidents in 2006 and 2007 in which Hickey allegedly subjected a girl under 12 years old to sexual contact. The victim in each incident was the same girl.

A warrant for Hickey’s arrest was issued on June 6, 2007, but Hickey managed to evade police for nearly six years. The circumstances of Hickey’s arrest last week are unclear. Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett is prosecuting the case against Hickey, but she was unavailable Tuesday.

Hickey waived a reading of the charges against him on May 10, but did not enter a plea. His next appearance before the Hancock County Superior Court is scheduled for June 20.

Each count of unlawful sexual contact is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
