Two Catholic priests in St. John Valley retire; 8 other priests reassigned

PORTLAND, Maine — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland on Sunday announced retirements of two priests and the reassignment of eight others.

The Revs. David Cote and Philip Cyr retired May 1, according to a press release issued by the diocese. Both men will turn 70 soon.

Cote most recently served as parochial vicar of St. Peter Chanel Parish in Van Buren and Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Church in Madawaska. Cyr was serving as pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in St. Agatha when he retired.

The Rev. Kent Ouellette will replace Cote and the Rev. James Plourde will take over for Cyr. Both assignments are effective June 1, according to a previously published report.

The Rev. Robert Lariviere will be pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Auburn beginning June 1, according to the release. He has spent the past year doing specialized ministry in Kansas.

A priest with the Society of African ministers has been appointed Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Bridgton as of July 1, the release said. The Rev. Innocent Okozi also will be pastor of Blessed Teresa Calcutta Parish in Norway beginning Aug. 1. Okozi is now the parochial vicar of Corpus Christi Parish in Waterville.

The Rev. Paul Marquis was appointed parochial vicar of Corpus Christi Parish in Waterville and assigned as chaplain at Maine General Hospital in Augusta beginning Aug. 1. He now is working as hospital chaplain at Maine Medical Center in Portland and parochial vicar in the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes.

The Rev. Richard McLaughlin as of Aug. 1 will serve as chaplain at Maine Medical Center and Mercy Hospital in Portland and parochial vicar in the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes. He now is serving as pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Auburn and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Norway.

The Rev. Seamus Griesbach was appointed parochial vicar of St. Michael Parish in Augusta as of Aug 1. He is serving as parochial vicar of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Bangor.

He will be replaced by the Rev. Daniel Baillargeon, currently parochial vicar of Good Shepherd Parish in Saco.

The Rev. Jack Dickinson will serve as parochial vicar of Good Shepherd Parish in Saco. He now is working as parochial vicar of Corpus Christi Parish in Waterville.

The Rev. Samuel Madza began serving Sunday as the parochial vicar of St. Michael Parish in Augusta. As of Aug. 1, the Society of African Missions priest will serve as Parochial Vicar of St. Joseph Parish in Bridgton and Blessed Teresa Calcutta Parish in Norway.

The diocese announced on May 6 the reassignment of half a dozen priests.
