ROCKLAND, Maine — An alert motorist and a city public works crew are credited with giving an early mother’s day gift to a mama duck.
The ducklings were caught in a storm drain by the entrance to The Home Depot driveway
on busy Route 1 in Rockland.
Rockland Water Pollution Director Terry Pinto said that a motorist spotted a mother duck Friday morning making noise near a grate over a storm drain. The motorist stopped to see what the commotion was about and then saw the baby ducks under the grate. That person, whose identity was not known, contacted the public works department.
Public works contacted the treatment plant and two employees were sent to aid the distressed ducklings. Nathaniel Borst and David Elwell removed the grate and removed the baby ducks for their waiting mother.
“It’s amazing that someone was observant enough to see the duck acting differently and responded,” Pinto said.
Once the mother had her babies rounded up, she took them off toward the woods, he said.
