Two Maine umpires to work Little League World Series

By Ernie Clark, BDN Staff

Two Little League Baseball and Softball umpires from Maine are among 115 game officials announced Monday who will be working this summer’s nine different Little League World Series.

Louis Durbin of Cherryfield and Maine District 1 and Joseph Ouellette of Brewer and Maine District 3 will represent the Pine Tree State, Durbin at the Senior League Softball World Series scheduled for Aug. 4-10 at Lower Sussex, Del., and Ouellette at the Junior League Baseball World Series set for Aug. 11-17 at Taylor, Mich.

Appointment as a member of the umpiring crew for a World Series is the highest honor Little League Baseball and Softball can bestow on an umpire, and selection means that these umpires have reached the highest level of proficiency and are considered among the best in the world, according to a press release from Little League. The men and women volunteering for these series come from 28 states, six countries, Aruba, Curacao and Puerto Rico.

The process for selection to work a World Series starts with a nomination from a district administrator to the regional office. The regional office, along with the region’s umpire-in-chief, considers all umpires nominated before selecting those who most closely meet the criteria for selection.

All umpires hoping to make it to a World Series must have recently worked one of the regional tournaments in the same Little League division as the World Series they are being considered to officiate. Regional tournament experience at other divisions is also considered when making the appointment.

An umpire is eligible to be selected for a World Series assignment once every four years.

Each year, thousands of umpires officiate Little League games around the world, with most not receiving any pay for their time. Umpires who are selected to work a World Series are not reimbursed for their travel expenses.

Among other umpires announced for World Series duty Monday ARE the 12 people who will work at the 2013 Senior League Baseball World Series to be held Aug. 11-17 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor. Those umpires are Keith Allison (Martinsburg, W.VA.), Wayne R. Beaumier (Houston, Texas), Bill Bruce (Dillsburg, Pa.), Glenn Kugel (Portland, Ore.), Dave Lange (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), Aubrey C.N. Maduro (Noord, Aruba), Giuseppe Mariella (Novara, Italy), Richard Neff (Springhill, Fla.), Douglass J. Pfaffenberger (Houston, Texas), Ken Peterson (Sacramento, Calif.), Paul Sammon (Whippany, N.J.) and Clifford Sands (Bradley, Ill.)
