BANGOR, Maine — Police arrested a 43-year-old local man on an aggravated domestic violence assault charge Friday afternoon after a brief but tense standoff at his residence.

Police — including members of the Bangor Police Department’s Special Response Team — converged at 80 Elm St. after receiving a report about 3:20 p.m. that Harold Rogers was inside threatening to commit suicide with a firearm, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Rogers was taken into police custody shortly before 4 p.m., after he left his residence unarmed and attempted to climb over a fence in the backyard, Edwards said.

Edwards said police had been seeking Rogers since Thursday night in connection with an assault on a woman.

“It was a little tense as Mr. Rogers had left the apartment and was trying to climb a fence here out back of 80 Elm St. but our officers did subdue him and take him to the Penobscot County Jail,” Edwards said.

Edwards said it was not immediately clear what other charges Rogers might face.

Police closed off several streets leading to the intersection of Elm and Grove streets during the incident as a precaution. The streets have reopened to traffic.

The Elm Street apartment building at which Friday’s incident took place is the same one where a fatal stabbing occurred on Dec. 29.

Jeffrey S. LeBlanc, 34, died after being stabbed in the abdomen by Scott Plummer during a fight in Plummer’s residence at 80 Elm St. The Maine attorney general’s office, which conducted an investigation into LeBlanc’s death, closed the case in January after finding that Plummer acted in self-defense.
