BANGOR, Maine — Maine native Jodie Fairbank has been named the new head coach of Husson University’s volleyball team, the school announced in a press release Thursday.

Fairbank played volleyball at the University of Southern Maine before transferring to Elizabeth City State University (N.C.) on a partial athletic scholarship. She graduated from the N.C. school in 2002 before getting her master’s degree in criminal justice from the American Military University in 2009.

“I am ecstatic that I have been hired as the new head volleyball coach for Husson,” said Fairbank. “I loved my time playing sports in college at the University of Southern Maine and then at Elizabeth City State in North Carolina, and I am happy to bring my knowledge and enthusiasm of the game to Husson.”

With the U.S. Army, Fairbank won multiple medals in commendation, achievement and good conduct. She coached and was a team member of two league teams.

“We are very excited to welcome Jodie to the Husson community as the new head volleyball coach. The life experience that she brings with her to Husson is immeasurable and we look forward to the continued advancement of the volleyball program. Jodie’s leadership and playing experience will no doubt make her a successful coach,” said Senior Woman Administrator Janine Gmitter.

Along with her ties to Maine, Fairbank has three family members who attended Husson, including two Husson Sports Hall of Fame members. Both her father, Donald “Buddy” Wood (1975), and grandfather, Colby N. Wood (1934), were inducted for their baseball careers.

“My family has a long history with this school, as my sister, father and grandfather all attended Husson and were successful student-athletes. After spending the last eight years serving the U.S. Army, I am happy to be back in Maine. I am hopeful that the new coaching staff will bring fresh and exciting changes to an already great program,” Fairbank said.
