GLENBURN – Carroll L. Conley Sr., 80, son of Bert and Addie (Krause) Conley, entered into the presence of his beloved Savior May 1, 2013.
“Coach” Conley gained respect and notoriety as a high school basketball and baseball coach in a career that spanned seven decades at Brownville Junction, Penquis Valley and Bangor Christian. He retired from public education in 1980 to be the director of Baptist Park, Mapleton, returning to his Aroostook County roots. Despite taking a substantial decrease in salary and retirement, he never regretted this decision in light of the many blessings of serving in full-time ministry. He was a man of many passions; his family, teaching and coaching, the outdoors, especially K.I, and Boston sports teams. Nothing, however, was more precious to him than his faith in Jesus Christ.
He is survived by the love of his life, his bride of 55 years, Pauline (Walton) Conley; son, Carroll Jr. and wife, Terri; and son, Berton and wife, Debra. He was lovingly called Opa by his five grandsons, Nathan and wife, Taria, Matthew and wife, Whitney, Jason, Michael and Andrew, one granddaughter, Caitlyn; and three great-grandchildren, Elyse, Brooklynn and Mason.
A celebration of Carroll’s life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Bangor Baptist Church, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Carroll Conley Scholarship Fund, Bangor Christian Schools, 1476 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401.
