ROCKPORT, Maine — The conditions of three midcoast residents taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor Monday afternoon with serious injuries after a head-on crash on Route 1 in Rockport have been upgraded.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. near the Fresh Off the Farm store, Rockport police Sgt. Travis Ford said Tuesday morning.

Thomas Tarbox, 73, of Camden was driving north on Route 1 in a 2003 Mini Cooper while Terry Ripley, 43, of Northport was driving south in a 1995 Ford Escort station wagon, Ford said. The two cars struck head-on, and Ford said the cause of the crash is not yet known. He said the case remains under investigation.

Tarbox, Ripley and her sole passenger, Melissa Parker, 31, of Lincolnville, were taken to EMMC. All were in serious condition, he said.

One of the three was flown directly to the Bangor hospital by LifeFlight helicopter, although Ford said he did not have the information on whom.

An EMMC nursing supervisor said Tuesday evening that the three all had been upgraded to fair condition.
