Waterville police probe assault, purse theft

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are searching for a man they say assaulted a woman and stole her purse Tuesday evening.

Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said Friday that the victim and her friend were walking on Squire Street when the suspect approached them from behind, assaulted the woman by punching her in the face, grabbed her purse and ran away.

The woman’s friend drove her to Inland Hospital for treatment, where the victim contacted police, Rumsey said.

The suspect is described as a tall, slender white male in his mid-20s to mid-30s. He was wearing blue jeans, a dark hooded sweatshirt and dark shoes at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Waterville police at 680-4700 and ask for Detective David Caron.
