Suspicious package briefly stops city bus

By Dawn Gagnon, BDN Staff

OLD TOWN, Maine — A package found by a Community Connector driver on an otherwise empty bus Friday afternoon prompted a call to Old Town police and resulted in a brief delay in service, the superintendent of the regional transit service confirmed.

“We had a situation where a bus driver observed a package on the bus. There was nobody else on the bus and he thought it was suspicious,” Superintendent Joe McNeil said. “We had him get off the bus and notified the police.”

Before police were able to check out the package, a man who had been riding on the bus called in to report that he had left the package behind after getting off the bus, McNeil said. The bus was back on its route in less than 15 minutes, he said.

“Everything worked out all right,” McNeil said. “With everything going on, it was better to be safe than sorry. [The driver] did the right thing. He followed our protocol.”
