ROCKPORT, Maine — The removal of a 2002 Chevy Malibu from a more than 100-foot-deep water-filled quarry in Rockport was a success Thursday morning.

The car had gone into the quarry on April 13 as a result of an accident, according to police.

The section of Main Street where the Simonton Corner Quarry Nature Preserve is located was closed off by police to allow a crane to be placed in the road to raise the car.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection oversaw removal of the vehicle. DEP oil and hazardous material responder Jeremy Greenman said he did not have an estimate on the cost of the recovery. He said the DEP would file a claim against the insurance of the vehicle owner.

Divers went down and found the vehicle 109 feet under the surface of the water in the quarry, Greenman said. Divers attached cables to the vehicle and by 10 a.m. it was pulled from the depths of the quarry and brought to land.

The DEP had an oil spill boom encircling where the vehicle was located. A strong smell of gas could be detected when the car was pulled out of the quarry.

The driver of the car — Christan Marston, 22, of Appleton — was issued a summons for failing to report the accident when it occurred and for leaving the scene of the accident, according to police. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. on April 13.

Marston managed to escape the vehicle before it sank, but did not report the accident until the following day.

The vehicle belonged to her uncle, according to police.
