DEXTER, Maine — A 17-year-old male from Dover-Foxcroft is facing multiple charges after stealing three cars in Sangerville and leading police on a brief manhunt in Dexter, according to authorities.

The juvenile, whose name was not released because of his age, was taken into custody Thursday morning by Piscataquis County sheriff’s deputies, Dexter police, state police and the Maine Warden Service, according to Piscataquis County Deputy James Kane.

Kane said the teen stole the vehicles from residences in Sangerville overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. He ditched the first two after they became stuck in the mud and crashed the third one in Dexter.

The teen also had a stolen firearm, the deputy said, resulting in a lockdown of SAD 46 schools, according to Superintendent Kevin Jordan.

Jordan said the lockdown was lifted after the suspect was arrested, and that students were not allowed to go outside during the investigation but were attending classes as scheduled.

After the crash, the teen fled into nearby woods off Route 7, but he was quickly captured by police, according to Kane.

The teen was charged with motor vehicle theft, possession of a firearm and theft of a firearm. He was taken to Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston.
