Auction to benefit Stearns High’s Project Graduation parties set for Friday

By Nick Sambides Jr., BDN Staff

MILLINOCKET, Maine — Project Graduation organizers will auction more than 100 items at Stearns High School on Friday to help pay for both chemical-free high school parties this year.

“I am not sure how much we are going to raise. If I got $5,000, I would be happy. I think last year we got $4,000,” Millinocket School Committee Chairman Kevin Gregory said Wednesday.

The first overnight party will be held on Stearns’ prom night, May 8, at New England Outdoor Center. It includes breakfast in the morning and a day of white-water rafting for those who choose to do so. It is open to all Stearns students and their dates, Gregory said.

The second event will be on graduation night, June 11, at Pins ‘N Cues bowling alley in Millinocket, Gregory said.

Organizers will have the auctioned items on display at the Stearns library center at 5:30 p.m. The auction will start at 6 p.m., said Gregory, who will run the auction.

Donations may be mailed to Stearns High School chem-free event, 199 State St., Millinocket 04462. Anyone wishing to donate items to the auction should call Stearns’ workers Sue Buzzell or Linda Wasilauskis as soon as possible at 723-6430, Gregory said.

“It’s about keeping our kids safe,” Gregory said. “In the old days, we could always count on there being some bad accident. If we can take the keys out of the kids’ hands and keep them safe I think it’s a win-win.”
