BANGOR, Maine — Author Stephen King said Wednesday he and his wife, author Tabitha King, recently made a sizable financial donation to a Maine gun control advocacy group because they support state efforts to tighten controls on sales of certain firearms. The Coalition for a Safer Maine posted on its website on April 10 that the Kings had made the donation in support of their cause.

“Yes, I can confirm the donation,” Stephen King, a gun owner, wrote in an email to the Bangor Daily News. “I don’t want to give the amount, but as I’ve already said, it was in the five-figure range.”

King, who previously wrote an essay explaining his views on gun control published in the BDN, reiterated his views in his email Wednesday.

“I’d like to see stricter controls on the sale of high-powered automatic and semiautomatic weapons, if not on the federal level — where elected representatives have proved reluctant to take any action, in spite of public pressure — then at the state level,” King wrote. “As a gun owner, I support the Second Amendment. What I don’t support are unregulated sales which make it easier for these weapons to fall into the hands of mentally unstable people and those who are considering acts of terror. We can’t solve the problem, but a few rational controls would be a first step. Let’s try to keep these guns out of the hands of people who might use them to kill the innocent and unsuspecting. All I’m saying.”
