PROSPECT — The Friends of Fort Knox board of directors has approved the commissioning for the writing of a new book on the history of the 19th century fortification, a National Historic Landmark and State Historic site.

The author selected to pen the new book is Liza Gardner Walsh of Camden, who has worked as a children’s librarian, a high school English teacher, writing tutor and museum educator, and holds a master’s degree in writing from Vermont College. She has written “The Fairy House Handbook,” “The Fairy Garden Handbook,” and “Haunted Fort: The Spooky Side of Fort Knox.”

A previous book about the fort, “Fort Knox Fortress In Maine” by John Cayford, was published in 1983, but is now out of print.

Friends Executive Director Leon Seymour said, “The organization is very excited about this project and hopes the creation of this book will serve as an educational resource for generations to come.”

Seymour said the book would touch on a number of topics beyond the story of the fort, including the story of the Friends of Fort Knox, geologic history of the site, and military activity in the region. He also is seeking families to relate generational memories of their experiences at the fort.

Fort Knox was constructed because Maine was repeatedly involved in northeast border disputes with British Canada, and the area between Castine and Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Despite the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River valley against a possible future British naval incursion.

The Friends anticipate the book will be completed and ready for distribution by the spring of 2014.

Those who wish to be interviewed by the author to share family memories about the fort may email FOFK1@aol.com or write to: The Friends of Fort Knox, P.O. Box 456, Bucksport ME 04416.
