Howard ‘Burpee’ Calkins

HAMPDEN – Howard “Burpee” Calkins, 97, passed away peacefully April 21, 2013, at his home. Burpee was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Orono, to Jeremiah and Bertha (Foss) Calkins.
Burpee grew up in Hampden before serving in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. It was while he was stationed in Australia that he met his wife, Jessie. Together, they operated Calkins Farm Stand on Main Road South, Hampden, since the late 1940s. Burpee was an independent man who made his living as a commercial fisherman, poultryman and farmer. Burpee will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend.
Burpee is survived by son, John Calkins; daughters, Janice and husband, Frederick, and Betty Nelson and husband, Kevin; grandchildren, Matthew Minson, Monica Minson and Benjamin Nelson; sister-in-law, Ivy Gunning; brother-in-law, John Ashford; as well as several nieces and nephews. Burpee was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife, Jessie; infant son, Clyde; brothers, Lester, Arthur and Alvah; and sister, Florence Rogerson.
A funeral service celebrating Burpee’s life will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating.
