NEWRY, Maine — Dr. Dieter Kreckel, M.D., of Rumford was recognized this month as Maine’s Family Physician of the Year.
Kreckel, who has practiced at Swift River Family Medicine for 20 years, earned the honor on April 11 at Sunday River during the Maine Academy of Family Physicians’ annual meeting.
He was chosen for his outstanding accomplishments and dedication to his patients and the community. His work includes obstetrics, hospital care, house calls, school physician and hospice.
He also has been the director of Central Maine Medical Center’s Rural Track Residency Program since 2005.
In addition, he has served as the lead physician for the patient-centered medical home pilot program, medical director at Swift River and president of the medical staff at Rumford Hospital.
Kreckel received his bachelor of science degree in biology from Edinboro State University, and a master’s degree in wildlife biology from Washington State University. He received his medical doctor degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1980.
