BANGOR, Maine — A local man is behind bars Monday after an altercation with another man led to an assault charge, according to police.

Officer Tim Wheelden was on patrol on Hammond Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday when he saw a woman in the middle of the road flagging him down, according to Bangor Police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

“There were two men that were trying to get into a fight outside,” one of which was the woman’s boyfriend, Edwards said.

The aggressor, 28-year old Daniel Kelley, yelled curse words at the officer, ran toward the woman’s boyfriend and “said he was going to kick his [butt],” Edwards said.

Kelley pushed the other man and refused to comply when Wheelden attempted to bring him into custody, Edwards said, forcing the officer to use mace to get Kelley under control.

The other man was not injured in the incident. Edwards did not know what prompted the two men to have the altercation.

Kelley was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with assault, Edwards said. He remained at the jail Monday.
