MOUNT DESERT, Maine — The body of a missing Tremont man whose boat capsized on Long Pond late on Wednesday was found on Saturday afternoon not far from where the vessel is believed to have tipped over.

Doug Rafferty, a Maine Warden Service spokesman, said Saturday afternoon that the body of Cory Farley, 38, of Tremont was found in less than 30 feet of water. Divers were searching the water for approximately 15 minutes before making the grim discovery. They had planned to begin searching Long Pond at 9 a.m., but weather conditions delayed the search until 1 p.m.

Farley celebrated his birthday on Wednesday by going fishing on the pond, which is about 4 miles long north to south, according to wardens. The pond is less than a mile across at its widest point.

Farley was joined by his friend, 67-year-old Richard Weimer of Charlton, Mass.

Warden Service Sgt. David Craven said that the search efforts began on Thursday afternoon at around 1 p.m. after someone saw the capsized 12-foot aluminum boat on Long Pond.

Wardens believe the boat flipped on the pond in the late afternoon or early evening on Wednesday, when they say a strong wind was blowing from the northwest.

Weimer’s body was found in the pond on Thursday and has been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta.

Rafferty said Saturday that Farley’s body was found near where Weimer was recovered. The area on Long Pond was in an area where side-scan sonar had less effective search capability.

Searchers with the Mount Desert police and fire departments, Acadia National Park and the Warden Service used four boats throughout the day on Friday to search for signs of Farley in the pond and along the shore. Searchers from the Southwest Harbor Fire Department, MDI Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard had assisted with the search on Thursday.

Farley’s body will be taken to the medical examiner’s office in Augusta.
