By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — A woman with prior theft convictions is facing a felony charge after leaving Walmart without paying for a purse, police said.

Gloria Smith, 39, of Williamsburg walked out of the Stillwater Avenue store without paying for the pocketbook shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, according to Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt.

Loss prevention staff at Walmart confronted Smith as she was leaving the store and police were immediately called, the lieutenant said.

Hunt added the value of the purse was not included in the police report.

Smith was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail after being charged with Class C felony theft, which is punishable by up to five years imprisonment. No information was available on Smith’s prior thefts.

Smith has since been released on bail from the jail, Hunt said.
