BANGOR, Maine — This year’s Hike for the Homeless raised more money for the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter than initially estimated, the shelter’s director said this week.

On the day of the hike, which took place on April 13, shelter Director Dennis Marble announced that the 769 people who took part in the annual event had raised $27,000 for the shelter at the corner of Main and Cedar streets.

Funds, however, continued to come in during the week and as of Thursday, the total stood at $38,000 — just $2,000 short of the shelter’s$40,000 goal.

Now in its 18th year, the hike is one of the primary fundraisers for the shelter, which receives only 20 percent of its $500,000 budget from state and federal resources and depends on fundraising for the rest.
