ORRINGTON, Maine — What started off as a permitted grass fire on River Road Thursday afternoon ended as a barn fire, the town’s fire chief said.

The fire at 280 River Road was reported about 2:50 p.m., said Fire Chief Mike Spencer.

The property owner, Charles Taylor, was burning grass in a field surrounding the barn and had the needed permit, Spencer said.

Taylor reportedly had finished burning the grass on the south side of the barn and, believing that fire to be out, moved to the north side of the building, a roughly 30-by-40-foot two-story barn clad in asphalt shingles covered with siding, Spencer said.

Shortly afterward, the barn was on fire, Spencer said.

“It went fast,” he said, “It was such a ball of fire that we could not see the frame of the barn through the flames so we could tell what was burning.”

Orrington police temporarily shut down Route 15 to allow fire crews to get water to the site from across the road. Firefighters from Orrington were assisted at the scene by their counterparts from Brewer, Holden, Eddington, Bucksport and Dedham.

No one was injured in the fire.

The barn and its contents were destroyed. Taylor’s house, about 200 feet away, was not damaged, Spencer said.
