BANGOR, Maine — A local woman is facing a felony theft charge after being accused of leaving Walmart with $1,700 worth of merchandise on April 4, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday.

Officer Dan Sanborn went to the Stillwater Avenue store when it was reported Linda Haines, 45, had left the store with the unpaid items, Edwards said.

Haines wheeled her cart past an assistant manager, loaded the items into her vehicle and drove off, Edwards said. The assistant manager noticed Haines had left her purse in the bottom of the shopping cart with her driver’s license inside.

Sanborn contacted Haines and made arrangements to meet her at the police station on April 11, and after interviewing her, she was summoned for a Class C charge of theft but not arrested, the sergeant said.

A court date has not been set for Haines.
