WATERVILLE, Maine — A local man is facing up to five years in prison after taking a bag of returnables off another man’s pickup truck, police said.
Dorrance Richardson, 41, of Waterville is facing a Class C felony charge of theft in the wake of the incident on Monday night, Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said.
The charge was a felony due to Richardson having two prior theft convictions, one in 1992 and the other in 1999.
Waterville police Officer Chase Fabian had responded to Elm Street after it was reported a man had taken a bag of returnable bottles from another man’s truck, Rumsey said.
The deputy chief said the bottles were valued at just over $4.
Fabian originally released Richardson after gathering his information, but after learning of the prior theft convictions, Richardson was placed under arrest and brought to the Kennebec County Jail, Rumsey said.
Richardson’s first court appearance is May 14.
