KENNEBUNK, Maine — Kennebunk police are warning residents to be wary of alleged scammers pretending to be firefighters raising money for burned children.

According to a brief alert issued by the Kennebunk Police Department Friday afternoon along with its regular biweekly arrest blotter, residents in the town have reported being contacted by individuals claiming to be local firefighters conducting a fundraiser for child burn victims who want to go to summer camp.

“Residents have been asked to leave a monetary donation or check — written to ‘Deposit Only’ — in an envelope and to place the envelope on their front door where a fire department member will retrieve it,” Kennebunk Police Lt. Anthony Bean Burpee wrote in a Friday announcement.

“Residents are being warned that such calls are telephone scams, and that the Kennebunk Fire Department is not involved in such activity.”
