DOVER-FOXCROFT – George W. Warren, 100, husband of Melba (Merrill) Warren, died April 10, 2013, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Jan. 18, 1913, in Portland, the son of Harry W. and Lucinda (Foss) Warren.
He was a graduate of Foxcroft Academy, class of 1930, where he participated in several sports and was captain of the football team. At the University of Maine he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After receiving a degree in electrical engineering in 1935 he married his high school sweetheart. He served with the U.S. Army-Air Force during World War II in New Guinea. Following the war, Mr. Warren and his family returned to Dover-Foxcroft where he was employed for 32 years by the U.S. Postal Service, the last 20 years as Postmaster. He was a past member and president of Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Club, served several years on the Dover-Foxcroft school board and SAD 68 board of directors and a life time member of Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. He was an avid bridge player. He and his wife wintered in Florida for more than 30 years, always returning in the summer to their beloved cottage on Sebec Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Melba, of Dover-Foxcroft; two daughters, Merrill Ann Clukey of Garland and Julie Hey of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren, Wendy Scarce of New York, Brent Clukey of Texas, Sean Corcoran of New York and Ryan Corcoran of Kansas; five great-grandchildren, Brian Kobernuss and Olivia Bonesteel, both of New York, Paul Clukey and Robert Clukey, both of Texas, and Finn Corcoran of Kansas. He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Lawrence F. Warren.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church, with the Rev. Chad Poland officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Dover Cemetery.
