BANGOR – Helen (Boulter) MacDonald
Helen (Boulter) MacDonald, 88, passed to her Lord April 9, 2013, at a local hospital. Born May 26, 1924, in Bangor, Helen was the first born of Edward and Evelyn Boulter.
Educated in Bangor schools, Helen graduated in 1942 from Bangor High School. In 1946, Helen completed her studies at the University of Maine earning a degree in Romance Languages. After graduation, Helen worked for Merchant’s National Bank until she married William L. MacDonald in 1950. They moved to Washington D.C., where she worked for Union Trust while William continued his education. After William completed his education, they returned to Maine and for 62 years they enjoyed the special blessings of a loving marriage bringing joy and fulfillment to each other. Helen was a devoted wife, daughter, mother and grandmother, fulfilling these callings with unselfishness, dedication, purposefulness and love. Loyalty and commitment to family and friends were evident in her expressions of encouragement and caring so often expressed in a written note or card. Nearly 20 years after graduating from the University, Helen returned to college earning teacher certification and for 15 years served in long term and daily substitute teaching assignments at Vine Street School. She and Bill well into their senior years enjoyed classes offered through the University Senior College and at the local adult education classes. Summers at the family camp on Molasses Pond were so special to Helen. Her enjoyment of times at the camp are captured in journal entries Helen wrote during her summer at Molasses. Helen was a member of First Baptist Church of Bangor, worshipped for 45 years at Columbia Street where she was active in the Soup Kitchen ministry. In recent weeks, she particularly enjoyed a Bible study on life in heaven as she longed for her eternal home. Helen was a member of Quipus, Eastern Star and Sunshine Club. She was a past member of Junior League and was a Chi Omega alum.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, parents, and daughter-in-law, Shirley A. MacDonald. She is survived by her two sons, Thomas MacDonald and wife, Joan, of Bath and Robert MacDonald of Bangor; brother, Arthur E. Boulter and sister-in-law, Helen S. Boulter of Bangor; four grandchildren, Megan MacDonald of Marietta, Ga., Andy MacDonald of Bath, Katy MacDonald of Bangor and Sarah MacDonald of Bangor.
