SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — The school department is going out of town for the next principal of South Portland High School.

The school board is expected Monday night to appoint Ryan Caron, currently principal at Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram, to replace James Holland beginning July 1.

Caron, 36, is a Gorham resident who has been Sacopee Valley principal for the past three years. He was assistant principal at the school for three years before that.

Sacopee Valley is in School Administrative District 55, which includes Baldwin, Cornish, Hiram, Parsonsfield and Porter.

Caron on Monday morning said he is looking forward to working in South Portland because of its “greater resources [and] the opportunity to pursue my vision for education in an environment where there is more student choice and a history of progressive education choices.”

Previously, as a social studies teacher at Windham High School, Caron said he witnessed the completion of a new school and its benefits for students, staff and the community. He said he looks forward to seeing the same in South Portland, where the high school is undergoing a major renovation and expansion.

Holland announced his resignation, effective June 30, on Feb. 8. He was appointed before the 2011 school year after serving as principal of Livermore Falls High School for a year and as assistant principal at Cony High School in Augusta for six years.

The School Board meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
